Overview
Viking Valley – where the viking age never endedDeep in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Nærøyfjord, something extraordinary awaits you.
Description
Tucked between ancient mountains and one of the world’s most breathtaking fjord landscapes lies in Njardarheimr – a living, breathing town where history isn’t just told. It’s lived.
Step through the gates. Step back 1000 years
The moment you enter Viking Valley, the modern world fades away. The smell of tar and open fire fills the air. The sound of axes meeting wood echoes between the buildings. Real people – passionate historians, craftpeople and Viking enthusiasts from across the world, go about their daily life just as the Vikings once did.
This is not a museum. This is a community. A world built from the ground up.
Njardarheimr is a village of more than 20 buildings spanning over 2000 m² - and it’s still growing. Every structure has been crafted using authentic Viking Age building techniques, with materials sourced locally from the Nærøyfjord; peat, roof shingles and timber, just like the ancient stave churches. Every decoration, every detail, every design choice is rooted in the Viking Age – brought to life with soul and craftmanship.
Get involved. Get your hands dirty.
This is where history becomes personal. At Njardarheimr you don’t just watch – you participate:
- Try your hand at archery or axe throwing
- Learn Viking lore from the inhabitants themselves
- Explore the forge, the longhouse and the craftsmen’s quarters
- Discover how Vikings built, cooked, traded and worshipped
- Join the daily life of Viking families – and become part of the story
Whether you’re eight or eighty, a history enthusiast or just looking for an unforgettable experience, Viking Valley opens its gates to all. The Vikings shaped the world we live in today – their journeys, their boats, their culture and their spirit left marks that still echo through modern society.
