Overview
Norway's second biggest city charms its visitors with a perfect mixture of maritime flair and history, and traditional architecture. Bergen is surrounded by mountains and the sea, so it offers a huge variety for an active holiday - be it water sports, hiking or cycling.Description
At the heart of Bergen lies Bryggen, the historic Hanseatic wharf and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its colourful wooden buildings and narrow passages. Nearby, you can explore the Fish Market, cafés, museums and the harbour. A trip up Mount Fløyen offers beautiful views across the city and surrounding landscape. Bergen is also an important starting point for journeys into the fjords of Western Norway.
Other memorable places Bergen has to offer:
Bergenhus Fortress
Located at the entrance to Bergen’s historic harbour, Bergenhus is one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved fortifications. The area has served as a royal residence, church centre and military stronghold throughout its long history.
Mount Ulriken
At 643 metres, Ulriken is the highest of Bergen’s seven mountains and offers panoramic views over the city, fjords and surrounding landscape. The Ulriken Cable Car provides an easy way to reach the top, where you will also find walking and hiking opportunities.
Fantoft Stave Church
Originally built in Fortun in Sogn around 1170, the church was moved to Bergen in 1883 and later reconstructed following a fire in 1992. It is a beautiful example of traditional Norwegian stave church architecture.
KODE Art Museums
KODE is one of the largest museums for art, crafts, design and music in the Nordic region, with several museum buildings in central Bergen. Its collections include important works by Norwegian artists such as Edvard Munch, Harriet Backer, Nikolai Astrup and J.C. Dahl.
Troldhaugen – Edvard Grieg’s Home
Troldhaugen was the home of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg for 22 years and is beautifully located south of Bergen. Visitors can explore the grounds, concert hall and the small composer’s hut where Grieg created many of his best-known works.
